The collapse of virtual trust online has become increasingly practical, measurable, and costly. Businesses have the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) to thank for that.

But for mid-sized companies and enterprise companies that have spent the past decade digitizing workflows, onboarding customers, and building trust in self-service channels, the timing couldn’t be worse. Just as digital maturity is beginning to pay off, a new wave of AI-enabled robots that are faster, cheaper, and more adaptable than anything before them are beginning to erode the very foundations on which these newly upgraded systems depend.

For middle market companies, this creates a paradox. The same efficiencies they invested in, such as automation, self-service portals, and API-driven integrations, are now the same surfaces that agent bots and malicious AI tools exploit.

Fraud is no longer an anomaly, but something built into seemingly normal activity.

What distinguishes the current response from Big Tech is not just increased vigilance. It is a reformulation of the problem. Instead of treating robots as external threats that must be eliminated, these companies are redesigning their products to fit into a mixed ecosystem of humans and machines.
