Majority Leader John Thune won unanimous approval to adjourn the Senate, sending lawmakers home earlier than many expected and extending the July recess period. This leaves the long-awaited Clarity Act with a much tighter timeline for passage before the summer recess in August.
“Clarity Act summer passage in jeopardy as US Senate adjourns early”
By unanimous consent late into the night, Senator John Thune adjourned the Senate session for an extended recess until July 13. Anna Polina Luna confirmed.
She added that not a single senator objected to the early postponement, which means that the Senate will return home after Wednesday’s vote. This reduces the time available to pass the Clarity Act amid a tight legislative calendar.
She added: “I will not vote to reopen the session until the Senate returns to Washington. The Senate is literally running for election and not a single senator has objected to going on vacation before the Fourth of July.”
The timeline for the cryptocurrency bill Clarity Act has been in limbo since it was placed on the Senate legislative calendar earlier this month. A full vote in the Senate requires 60 votes to overcome the political delay led by banking groups.
As CoinGape reported, Prospects of the Clarity Act being signed into law Polymarket stock fell 41% after the White House received a letter from US law enforcement groups. The groups said they support a regulatory framework for crypto assets, but raised concerns about aspects of financial crime.
Challenges resulting from the extended recess and Trump’s push to pass the Save America Act
With only a limited number of work weeks remaining before the longer August break, the Clarity Act faces a tight timeline. Cryptocurrency supporters had previously targeted a full Senate vote in July, but the reduced timeline makes a vote before August more difficult.
Senator Cynthia Lummis unveiled the final text of the Clarity Act It will be released during the July 4th holiday. She noted that the US Senate could then move forward with a full vote in July.
Furthermore, a House Financial Services Committee hearing on the CLARITY Act is already scheduled for July 17. Supporters are urging Congress to prioritize passing the cryptocurrency bill immediately after returning from recess.
However, the Senate’s adjournment before the July recess adds pressure to an already tight calendar amid other priorities like the America Rescue Act and the midterm elections.
US Rep. Anna Paulina Luna added: “John Thune is running and hiding because he doesn’t want to get his voter ID at the finish line.”
In addition, President Trump refused to sign the housing bill Contains a CBDC ban, saying he won’t sign anything until Congress approves the SAVE America voting bill. Trump also met with Republican senators after refusing to sign the bill.
