Coinkite has launched Coldcard MK5, the first hardware upgrade to the leading Bitcoin wallet since 2022.
summary
- The Coldcard MK5 features a 1.54-inch Gorilla Glass display, redesigned tactile buttons, and improved NFC technology for smoother Bitcoin transactions.
- The wallet retains the dual secure element architecture of MK4 from different chip vendors, keeping private keys completely separate.
- Coinkite’s NVK said MK5 is a reimagining of the user experience while maintaining the security standards the community has relied on for years.
Quinket Fired Coldcard MK5 on March 10, 2026, marking the company’s first hardware revision to the MK line since the MK4 arrived in 2022 and introducing five significant improvements to the user experience of the Bitcoin-only signing device.
“MK5 is not just an update, it is a reimagining of the user experience,” said NVK, co-founder of Coinkite. “More robust, clearer and more intuitive, all while maintaining the rock-solid security our users rely on to protect their Bitcoin.”
What has changed from MK4
The main hardware change is a 1.54-inch display protected by Gorilla Glass, replacing the previous one with a sturdier, sharper display. The MK4 uses recessed buttons that require fingertips to be pressed into the socket to register a click. The MK5’s redesign makes the buttons nearly flush with the body, providing crisp tactile response without the awkward finger placement of the previous model.
NFC capability has also been upgraded, improving the reliability of the wireless signature workflow introduced in Coldcard Q. The device retains the secure dual element design, pairing chips from different manufacturers alongside the microcontroller, the same security architecture that characterized the MK4 at launch. The MK5’s transparent case allows users to visually inspect the device’s internals for hardware implants, a feature that Coinkite emphasized as a physical security advantage over opaque designs.
All five upgrades focus on ease of use rather than core security. The MK5 continues to run the same open source firmware that has been vetted by Bitcoin community for years and remains designed exclusively for Bitcoin, in keeping with Quinite’s Bitcoin-only product philosophy.
the Hardware wallet The market becomes more competitive in 2026, with Trezor launching the Safe 7 in late 2025 and several manufacturers adding touchscreen and wireless features. Coinkite’s deliberate choice to avoid touchscreens and prioritize physical button feedback indicates a specific design philosophy: touch clarity over interface novelty.
The Coldcard MK5 is available through the official Coinkite store in multiple colors, including orange and glow-in-the-dark. Pricing was not revealed in the ad, but the device is positioned as a premium option for self-custodial Bitcoin holders who prioritize… Air gap security.
