Nebius Group (NASDAQ:NBIS) ended last week under extreme pressure, with its shares down about 19% despite… insurance GPU-backed financing facility of $775 million. Rather than reassuring the market, the new funding appeared to sharpen investor focus on the massive capital required to build out the company’s AI infrastructure over the coming years.
The decline also came amid a broad sell-off across AI and cloud computing infrastructure stocks, suggesting that investors are becoming increasingly selective after months of enthusiasm surrounding the sector. While Nebius continues to expand its AI computing capacity, the latest funding represents only a small portion of the company’s planned investment program.
Financing covers limited expansion
Nebius’ newly announced financing is supported by deployed graphics processing units (GPUs) and cash flows generated from customer contracts. Structured as the company’s first senior secured loan, this loan carries a variable interest rate linked to a one-month SOFR plus a margin of 250 basis points and matures in October 2030.
Although the financing provides additional flexibility, it represents only a small portion of the capital spending program expected for 2026 by Nebius. The company has outlined plans to invest between $20 billion and $25 billion in AI infrastructure this year, meaning the new debt is only financing a limited portion of its broader expansion strategy.
Management noted that the facility, along with cash flows to contracted customers, fully supports the infrastructure deployment associated with this financing. However, investors continue to evaluate how Nebius intends to finance the remainder of its multi-billion dollar construction operation without putting undue pressure on shareholders or its balance sheet.
The asset-backed strategy attracts attention
Unlike traditional corporate borrowing, Nebius structured the deal around operating assets that were already generating revenue. GPUs that effectively serve customers become collateral, allowing the company to release capital while operations continue.
The funding approach is similar to funding structures adopted by other AI infrastructure providers, including… CoreWeave. While CoreWeave recently acquired a much larger GPU-backed facility with a slightly lower borrowing spread, the two transactions differ significantly in size, maturity and credit profile.
For Nebius, the key question is not just getting one successful funding package, but whether similar facilities can be replicated as additional AI clusters come online.
Executives remain confident in this approach. Chief Operating Officer Ofir Navi described the financing as an important milestone in the company’s long-term strategy, noting that demand from lenders exceeded the amount ultimately raised.
Large contracts support growth
i won’t He stressed that customer demand remains strong. The company has disclosed more than $40 billion in additional contracted revenue, and counts major technology companies, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms, among its clients.
Beyond computing infrastructure, Nebius recently announced a separate $1.7 billion energy initiative with support from the Industrial Development Fund and Oaktree. The project will fund Bloom Energy’s fuel cell deployments designed to power future AI infrastructure. While the investment supports the broader Nebius ecosystem, it is structured as project financing rather than direct corporate financing.
Combined with the GPU-backed facility, the latest announcements bring Nebius’ infrastructure-related financing to approximately $2.5 billion, though only $775 million represents direct borrowing by the company.
