Trump said on Sunday that the United States and Iran have completed the peace agreement and will sign it on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland.
Trump said on Truth Social:
“The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and at the same time, I authorize the immediate lifting of the naval blockade imposed by the United States. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
Pakistan sets the signing schedule while regional mediators prepare for the upcoming talks
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the first official announcement on X just minutes before President Trump made his own announcement statement. Shahbaz said that the two countries reached an agreement to stop military operations immediately and permanently on all fronts, including Lebanon.
According to him, the mediators will hold meetings throughout the week leading up to the signing ceremony. During this time, neither side would stop attacking until an agreement was drafted to sign. Discussions will include technical terminology, procedures to be taken and preparations to implement the agreement.
Shehbaz said that the official event will be held in Switzerland on Friday. He added that:
“We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to our brothers in these mediation efforts, and the great leadership of the State of Qatar, for their support in reaching this agreement. I would also like to especially thank the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkey for their tremendous contributions in this regard.”
The Pakistani leader said that the upcoming meetings will prepare the two sides for technical negotiations and the signing itself.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had discussed part of a possible memorandum on state television two days before the announcement. Abbas said that the plan includes ending the fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon specifically. He also confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz forms part of the package.
Abbas said Iran Oman was preparing to introduce a different system for ships using the strategic route. He added that the legal rules and future management structure will be determined during a 60-day negotiation period. Sanctions relief and the Iranian nuclear program were left for the next stage rather than being resolved in the first document.
Iranian media had already published several allegations about the content of the agreement. Abbas responded to X by asking the media not to guess terms that officials had not announced. Trump later shared Abbas’s post on Truth Social.
A senior Iranian official had told Reuters that Washington would release $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets under the draft. Tehran agrees not to build or acquire nuclear weapons. Iran will also maintain its current nuclear stance during the talks, which means not increasing uranium enrichment and not expanding its nuclear facilities before the final document is completed.
Beirut attack raises new tensions as Iran, Israel and Trump issue warnings
The agreement came after an Israeli raid on the southern suburb of Beirut exacerbated tensions on Sunday. Lebanese official media reported that three people were killed and 15 others were injured. The Israeli military said it struck a Hezbollah command post after the Iran-backed group opened fire toward northern Israel earlier that day.
Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said the strike showed that Washington lacks the “will and ability” to fulfill its promises. The Iranian Foreign Ministry held the United States responsible. Tehran warned of a “strong response,” while the country’s top joint military command said it had its “finger on the trigger” and was ready to strike “the heart of the enemy.” Iran said that the United States would be responsible for any Israeli action that disrupts the talks. This warning came before Trump posted it publicly.
Before publishing his announcement of the final deal, Trump said that the Beirut attack “should not have happened.” He added that this came as the United States and Iran were about to complete peace talks.
Israel said it had no role in the planned US-Iranian agreement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disagreed with Trump over American demands that Israel reduce its operations in Lebanon while Washington tries to conclude the deal with Tehran.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon erupted again after the American-Israeli war against Iran began last February. Friday’s agreement now combines a ceasefire in Lebanon, navigation through Hormuz, the release of frozen Iranian funds, and another round of negotiations on sanctions and Iranian nuclear activities.
