Visa has partnered with OpenAI to support the integration of AI-powered payments into ChatGPT Payments. This news comes on the heels of the artificial intelligence company’s secret IPO filing.
Visa and OpenAI announce major partnership
Companies Announce Partnership at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco. The agreement will see Visa provide the payment network, digital credential technology and security systems to facilitate transactions conducted through OpenAI platforms.
It’s part of Visa’s broader strategy on agent commerce, a new space where artificial intelligence can handle shopping-related tasks. This includes researching and comparing products and making purchases on behalf of the user with their consent. Meanwhile, MasterCard has also entered Arena with the launch of its AI Agent payment system.
Under the terms of the deal, developers and merchants will have access to tools that will allow them to implement Visa payments for OpenAI-powered experiments. The companies are also investigating other enterprise applications, such as developer-focused applications tied to Codex and AI-powered workflows in businesses.
Furthermore, payments will be processed via AI agents in a user-defined environment, Visa says. Some of these restrictions could be spending limits, banking restrictions, or the need for approval before a transaction can be completed. Furthermore, the system works with token payment credentials, real-time authorization, and fraud detection technologies.
Jack Forestell, Executive Director of Product and Strategy at Visa, commented on this distinguished collaboration. “AI will transform commerce more profoundly than the Internet or mobile technology ever did,” he said.
“As AI agents become active participants in the economy, Visa’s focus is on ensuring transactions are reliable, secure and seamless,” Forestell added.
OpenAI’s take on collaboration
The hype around OpenAI grew after the Visa partnership as it came on the heels of Submitting a confidential subscription draft. Also, OpenAI noted that the use of AI in commerce is likely to grow beyond the norm, such as online shopping.
“Commerce will happen in many more places and in many more ways than it does today,” said Marco Mahros, Head of Partnerships and Commerce at OpenAI.
He said that AI agents will increasingly assist users with various aspects of purchasing, payments and other more complex financial activities. The partnership aims to develop infrastructure for “secure, transparent and user-controlled proxy transactions.” Mahrous said.
